History
Mark has opened shows for many of the Blues and Rock greats such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Otis Rush, Bonnie Raitt, T-Bone Walker, Albert Collins, Sunnyland Slim, Son House, The Allman Brothers, Hound Dog Taylor, B.B. King, Freddie King, Savoy Brown, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and many others. He was also the featured guitar player in Luther Johnson's Chicago Blues Band and he also backed Chuck Berry and John Lee Hooker. John Williamson played in the renowned Rochester band "Street" that signed and recorded with Verve Records and toured North America. After leaving Rochester "Street" made their home base New York City. In New York John met many famous musicians including Jimi Hendrix. The "Street" album is a real collector's item that is worth a good deal of money to knowledgable collectors of 60's and 70's music. John has many interesting stories of his band on the road and the ups and downs of being a traveling band. John is a very versatile musician as he also plays guitar, piano, and organ. Chris Williamson is John's son and is also a very versatile musician. Along with being a solid drummer Chris also plays guitar. Chris brings alot of energy and youthful enthusiasm into the group and we are lucky to have him. Except for his short stint in The Blues Express in 1993 Chris had not played blues until now and he's doing a great job. We only look for him to improve and drive the group even more than he already has. Mark Charles & The Blues Express, is a hard rockin' newly reformed blues outfit that plays a variety of high energy blues and rock blues. We do songs from the Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Winter, Lonnie Mack, Albert King, B.B. King, Johnny Winter, and Freddy King catalogs. We also do a rousing tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix that we've had many positive comments about. Along with this combination of music and some of our originals we've managed to develop a sound that is derivative of the music we love. The cover versions we play are not copies of the songs but are our own interpretations. If you like good, hard rocking guitar blues with some softer mellow moments thrown in, some rock'n roll, and a little soul too, we think you will like Mark Charles and The Blues Express. We have a large catalog of songs and will play to suit your taste
