History
My father used to sing Neil Young and Beatles songs to my older brother and younger sister while we were in diapers. I was raised listening to all different styles of music. My mom, who is not at all musical, randomly started only me off in orff classes, learning to listen to music, and training my ear. I then started violin at the Hochstein School of Music around the age of 5, with my teacher who I still have today, Joanne Lowe, who’s main instrument is actually the Viola. I played in many group class concerts and small recitals with my Dad, a musician himself, accompanying me on his guitar, piano, and accordion talents. I was highly encouraged to use my talent as much as possible.
I took up fiddling (and alternative styles on the violin) festivals and classes around the age of 9. I met my main fiddle influence, Jay Unger, by accident while on the way to finding a bathroom one day at one of his concerts, where I immediately fell in love with his stage presence and fiddling styles. I was highly inspired and encouraged by Joanne to take up many styles. I’ve competed in NYSSMA festivals for violin and voice, in March 2005. I then joined the Mixed and Select Choir at school, and am currently studying voice with Nadine Carey, at Hochstein. I am in the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra, in which I traveled to France with last year to perform, and next will be traveling to perform in Germany and the Czech Republic in April 2006.
At one point, my dad and I started to sing songs together at an open mic night at Daily Perks Coffee House. I then met a singer/songwriter/guitarist named Matt Cross, who asked me to improvise on my violin to his songs. We then started playing shows in and around Rochester, NY. I wanted to sing my own songs, so in December of 2004, I took up the guitar, and started writing my own music. I still played with Matt Cross for a while just on my violin and some back-up vocals. Eventually, when I learned and wrote enough songs and played out a lot more over the summer or 2005, I started playing my own stuff at our shows. Now we share shows on occasion, and back each other up.
Next year I'll be exploring the college world of music playing, studying, learning, partying, and experiences. I can't wait. Wish me luck. |
